What they are: Where rustic meets refined. Inventive concepts with creative names done with a west coast style.
Food editor's thoughts:
I don’t believe I’m breaking new ground here with this recommendation. The Mackenzie Room has been killing it for years ever since they launched back in 2015.
Chef Sean Reeve and his team provide one of the highest quality, and creative I might add, menus in the city. Their "chicken of the sea" dish (pictured above) is by far one of the most delicious plates on any menu going. It’s so good they can’t take it off. This coming from a restaurant which prides itself on creatively changing things up with its evolving chalkboard game.
Question: Am I wrong to think they should win an award for best named dishes? Wesley Snips? Hello Clarice? Life’s a Biche? Beauties! Well done indeed.
Nevertheless, this isn’t why they’re listed here today. In keeping with the meals-from-home ethos in today’s newsletter, I was reminded of what I love most about this restaurant, their “I want it all” offering. Similar to PB&J sandwiches and meals for the home, the true essence of exquisite dining is the shared menu concept.
This isn’t new. Thousands of restaurants globally do this, including many here in Vancouver. But surprisingly, The Mackenzie Room has found a way to brand their entire shared menu concept with a narrative. This quote from founder/director Andrew Jameson says it all:
"What we love about I Want it All is that we get to share with guests how we enjoy eating. We always want to try everything when we go out, so we thought that we should make that the backbone of what we want to offer. In addition to getting to try everything on the menu, it creates a natural kinship among the table and creates a unique social energy when people are taking each other into account and having an experience along side them."
I’ve never been disappointed and I doubt you will either. Try the “I Want It All” offering and let them take you down a fun and delicious journey.
