Tales of woe: What happened at the UBCM Housing Summit

Mayors let the province know their feelings on the housing changes

What happened: The Union of BC Municipalities held a housing summit this week to discuss housing policy changes, especially those announced by the province, and how municipalities will be best positioned to achieve the province’s housing targets, according to The Tyee.

Key trend: Reading the different media reports, what’s clear is that cities are feeling the heat from the province, and used the event as an opportunity to push back against the zoning changes and how it will change their communities.

  • Their concerns came down to funding. New buildings require new infrastructure — pipes, schools, etc — and municipalities are expected to bear the brunt of the cost.
