City staff just released their 2024 Budget. Between now and the final vote, things will undoubtedly change, and I hope to keep updated on those. For now, I’ve broken out what I think are some interesting trends and data points.
The much-touted fee increases earlier this year on things like parking and licensing don’t amount to much in the grand scheme of the budget. For example, license fee increases account for $15.14 million in new revenue, a 15 percent increase. But that’s only seven percent of the budget’s total increases.
Help us build the future of hyper-local news in Vancouver
If you've read this far, you probably get something out of Vancity Lookout — and I'd like to keep it that way.
I'm Geoff, the founder. Here's the honest version of how this works: every story you read here is reported by a small team and funded almost entirely by the few hundred Vancouver readers who've decided this kind of journalism is worth paying for. No hedge fund owners. No clickbait quotas.
Just neighbourhood reporting that takes time to do properly — the VPD budget, the Broadway Plan, the Downtown Eastside, city hall on the days nobody else shows up.
If you want to read more of this, and you can afford it, the most useful thing you can do is become a member. It's how the next story gets written
Together, we can rebuild local neighbourhood news in Vancouver.
